Weather Summary:
The last rain/snow bands of that first system pushed through the area this morning with snow above 2500-3000 ft. We won’t get much of a break before the 2nd storm pushes into the foothills and northern Sierra this afternoon.
As of 11 AM, we picked up 4 inches of snow at the Cascade Shores Weather Station overnight. Those totals will be increasing as we head through the day and overnight as the 2nd system pushes into the area.
Current radar is showing precip from the first system moving through the foothills, with rain /snow already crossing the coast range from the 2nd system.
As mentioned, this storm, originating from Western Canada will drop down from the north, into our area this afternoon, lasting into Sunday morning bringing more rain and foothill snow. Snow levels will fluctuate between 2500-3000 ft today, but lower later today and overnight to around 1500 ft as colder air spills in. SW winds will pick up later today gusting to 25 mph or more which may result in blowing and drifting snow, causing travel problems, especially above 3000-3500 ft. We may also see downed branches and trees from the winds which may cause power outages, especially in the upper foothills, so be prepared for that.
Forecast Snow amounts by Sunday evening:
Dusting-1″ – Penn Valley, LOP (1200-1500 ft)
3-7″ – Grass Valley, Nevada City areas(2500-3000 ft)
9-15″ – Cascade Shores, Banner Mtn, 5 Mile House areas (3100-3800 ft)
The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Warning is in effect for elevations above 2500 feet valid until 4 AM Monday. Foothill travel will become difficult this afternoon and tonight with chain requirements likely, especially above 3000 ft. Mountain travel will become difficult and dangerous. Travel is not advised in the Sierra.
Extended forecast: Next week looks cold and unsettled for the foothills. Forecast models are now in decent agreement for a storm system diving southward Tuesday through Wednesday of next week that could may possibly tap some Pacific moisture, with the southern branch of the jet stream and milder air affecting So Cal, with colder air and less precip in Nor Cal. Interestingly, the latest Forecast models show snow levels again lowering, around 2500-3000 ft on Wednesday with heavier snow developing. Looking beyond, next weekend also looks stormy and colder. More foothill snow for us?? We’ll see. Too soon to get excited yet. This is all still a ways out and is subject to change. I’ll fine tune the details over the next several days. Stay tuned!
