Outlook and Forecast: It was a snowy and cold Christmas Eve here in Cascade Shores and in the upper foothills. The temperature never rose above the freezing mark locally and for much of the upper foothill locations. as well. Snowfall was less than expected in the foothills, mainly due to timing of the upper low and delay of the arrival of the cold air behind the front which delayed the drop in snow levels. Despite that, the upper foothills still managed to pick up 3-5 inches anyway with 4 inches reported at the weather station. The high Sierra picked up an additional foot or more of cold powder which is good news.
In the short term – tonight looks cloudy and cold with a chance of snow showers, lasting into Christmas morning, then clearing as the upper low swings through the area. The weekend looks mostly clear and cold with lows in the 20’s. Beyond that, next week looks cool and unsettled with a couple of minor disturbances the first half of the week. Cool and clear beyond that. Be careful driving around the area over the next few days as roads will be icy in the late night and morning hours.
More good news is that the current Sierra Nevada snowpack currently stands at 112% of the long-term average for this date in December, which is great news and a fantastic start to winter!
The Long-range forecast models show mainly dry weather through the end of the year into the first week of January. After that, we may see a pattern change around the 7th of January where storms could start cutting under the ridge parked over Western Canada and the Pacific NW. That would be more typical of a strong El Nino pattern developing. The storms should then increase as we go further into January. Stay tuned!
